eCommerce Express Digest - July 2025

2 July 2025 Blog Posts

KT here! I’m excited to bring you the latest tech and digital marketing updates for June both locally and around the world and boy it was a big one.

Amazon’s Prime Day is set to be its longest yet, coinciding with 60% of Australian shoppers awaiting tax refunds. Meanwhile, the Buy Now, Pay Later industry faces new government regulations in Australia from June 10, aligning it with conventional credit products.

We’ll also explore key updates from Screaming Frog version 22 and Google’s revamped Search Console Insights, alongside the latest online departure; the end of MyDeal. To wrap things up, we’ll cover what we know so far about the latest Google Core Update, which began rolling out on June 30.

Catch up on the most important changes Marketers need to know:

Australia’s Buy Now, Pay Later sector underwent significant regulatory changes effective 10 June 2025

Australia’s Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) sector is now regulated like traditional credit products, with new rules taking effect from 10 June 2025. Services like Afterpay, Klarna and Zip must follow stricter guidelines to better protect consumers, particularly younger users. The changes come in response to ASIC research showing that two in five Australians used BNPL in the previous six months, with Gen Z and Gen Y the most active users.

For more detailed information on these changes, refer to the 9news article or the Australian Financial Complaints Authority. It will be interesting to see what (if any) changes these updates have on consumer behavior and spending.

Woolworths closes MyDeal to refocus on in-house marketplaces and cut losses

Woolworths will shut down MyDeal, an Australian online retail marketplace offering a wide range of home and lifestyle products and more, from various sellers across the country. MyDeal’s closure will significantly reduce Woolworths MarketPlus’s losses, but the company will retain MyDeal’s technology and relationships to support its other marketplaces. Woolworths originally acquired an 80.2% stake in MyDeal in 2022 for $271.8 million. Woolworths group CEO, Amanda Bardwell  cited an “intensely competitive market and the superior economics of marketplaces integrated into retail brands” as the reason behind the decision to shut down MyDeal. Woolworths will shift focus to its Everyday Market and Big W marketplace

Prime Day kicks off its longest ever Sales event

Amazon is extending its annual Prime Day to a four-day event for the first time, running from July 8 – July 11 across 22 markets, including Australia. The extended event offers Prime members exclusive deals across fashion, electronics, home, and more, with special deals launching every five minutes through a new feature, “Today’s Big Deals”. Amazon is also enhancing the shopping experience by integrating AI tools, including the AI shopping assistant Rufus, to personalise recommendations and track deals on previously purchased or frequently viewed items. For retailers, Amazon extending Prime Day means increased competition but also a chance to attract deal-seeking customers through targeted promotions and differentiation.

Google June 2025 core update rollout announced

Announced right at the death on June 30 – this update marks the second core update of 2025 and is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance the relevance and quality of search results. Google implements significant and extensive modifications to its search algorithms and systems through core updates, which happen multiple times throughout the year.

While they did not specify the exact date the rollout will be completed, they did confirm it will be available to all users over the coming weeks. And as with any core update, significant fluctuations in Google search results and rankings are expected. While some sites may see improved visibility, others could experience a temporary drop in rankings.

During a core update, rankings can fluctuate, it’s best not to make quick changes. Instead, follow the advice given by Google of what you can do while the update is still rolling out:

  1. Document changes: Keep logs of traffic and ranking fluctuations to support a clearer post-rollout review.
  2. Continue creating content: Prioritise content that aligns with user needs and highlights your site’s expertise and credibility (E-E-A-T).
  3. Avoid over-correction: Rankings may shift multiple times before settling.

The rollout has only just begun, and while some fluctuations are expected, it’s also a chance for  helpful and trustworthy sites to shine.
